Myrkviðr – Black Forest Mead
From Forest to Glass
Germany’s Black Forest, or Schwarzwald, is a mountainous region in southwestern Germany known for its dense evergreen woodlands and cherry-based traditions. Its shadowed landscape gives the region its evocative name.
The region inspired Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, or Black Forest Cake, a layered dessert traditionally combining chocolate cake, tart cherries, whipped cream, and Kirsch cherry brandy. Its precise origin remains disputed, although a written recipe survives from 1927.
Myrkviōr carries that celebrated flavor combination from cake to glass. Tart cherries echo the fruit and Kirsch character, while chocolate and vanilla capture the cake’s rich, creamy decadence. Sweet honey provides a luxurious foundation, and Amburana oak contributes warm baking-spice notes reminiscent of a freshly prepared dessert.
Its name, inspired by the Old Norse term for “Dark Forest,” connects the mead’s rich, mysterious character with the wooded landscape behind its inspiration. Originally based on a recipe shared by our good friend Jacob Cardis and tuned to Forgotten Gods Meadery’s taste, Myrkviōr is our decadent, 12% ABV interpretation of Black Forest Cake.
