At Forgotten Gods Meadery, we’ve always believed that mead should tell the truth of the land it comes from. When we ferment with real fruit — berries, stone fruits, orchard harvests, or wild-foraged treasures — we’re not just adding flavor. We’re capturing a moment in time, a season, a place, and the living character of the crop itself.
Nature Never Repeats Herself — and That’s the Magic
No two harvests are ever identical. A Montmorency cherry grown in one region may develop deeper color, while another year’s crop may lean brighter, sharper, or more aromatic. Soil, sunlight, rainfall, and temperature all shape the fruit’s personality — and those differences carry straight into the mead.
These variations aren’t flaws. They’re stories.
When we choose natural fruit over extracts or artificial flavorings, we’re choosing honesty. Each batch becomes a reflection of the year’s bounty — its triumphs, its challenges, and its unique character.
Flavor, Aroma, and Appearance: A Living Spectrum
Working with real fruit means embracing a beautiful spectrum of expression:
- Flavor: Natural fruit brings depth and nuance that no synthetic flavor can mimic. Tartness, sweetness, tannin, acidity — all shaped by the season.
- Aroma: Real fruit carries delicate aromatics that shift from crop to crop. One year’s cherries may smell bright and punchy; another year may lean soft and floral.
- Appearance: Color variation is one of the most honest signs of natural fermentation. We never chase uniformity with artificial dyes. If a fruit mead pours lighter or darker from one batch to the next, that’s nature speaking.
A Perfect Example: Blood Oath
Our latest batch of Blood Oath, crafted with Montmorency tart cherries, is a perfect reminder of why we embrace natural variation.
This year’s cherries produced a mead that is considerably lighter in color than previous batches — a soft ruby instead of the deeper crimson some may remember. But here’s the beautiful twist:
The flavor is even more intense.
The cherries brought a brighter, sharper tartness and a vivid cherry character that surprised even us. That’s the gift of working with real fruit — the land always has something new to say.
Why We Refuse Artificial Colors or “Consistency Tricks”
Some producers use artificial colors or flavorings to make every batch look identical. That’s not who we are.
We will never add artificial colors or synthetic flavorings just to force consistency. Our meads are alive, honest, and rooted in the natural world. Their variations are a feature — not a flaw.
When you pour a glass of our fruit mead, you’re tasting:
- the season
- the climate
- the harvest
- the fruit’s true character
It’s authenticity in its purest form.
The Bounty of the Land, Captured in a Bottle
Every batch of fruit mead we craft is a celebration of nature’s diversity. We want you to taste the difference. We want you to notice the shifts. We want you to experience the world the way we do — vibrant, unpredictable, and full of character.
Because when you drink natural mead, you’re not just tasting a recipe. You’re tasting a place in time.
